The book Boy is an autobiography by Roald Dahl that tells the story of his early life. He was born in 1916 in Cardiff, Wales, and attended school in the 1910s. The book records from his kindergarten days all the way up until he was 20. In the first chapter, Dahl speaks about himself as a baby, his parents, and his other family members. In the next chapter, he talks about his experience in kindergarten. This chapter also covered very important core things from his childhood. For example, his sister Astri died from appendicitis when she was seven years old. The loss of his sister devastated Dahl’s father so much that he became taken over with grief and came down with pneumonia. Penicillin not yet being discovered, so pneumonia was not curable. Roald’s father began to give up on life because of the loss of his daughter, and soon after getting the illness, he died. This left Roald’s mother, a young Norwegian woman in a country that was not hers, alone with five children, two of whom were not hers. She was also expecting another child. However, she was persistent and eventually moved to England and got Roald into kindergarten. Roald’s mother showed extreme determination in the face of adversity. All in all, Roald’s childhood tales show how he and his family overcame massive roadblocks in their lives.
