Hello! Today I’ll be writing about the story Heidi. Written by Johanna Spyri, it’s a wonderful story about family, love, and friendship. It’s a little bit of a lengthy story, so it will be split into parts. This is part one. I hope you enjoy the review.
The book opens with Heidi climbing a mountain with her Aunt Dete to reach her grandfather’s house. When Heidi arrives at the home with her aunt, her grandfather is upset and shocked because he was not expecting them. He had not seen Heidi since she was an infant. Aunt Dete then promptly leaves, and Grandfather is left with Heidi. He shows her where she will sleep and store her clothes, introduces her to the goats, prepares a meal for them to eat, and she then heads to bed. That night there was scratching on the windows from tree branches, and Grandfather got up and went to Heidi’s room because he assumed she would be afraid. He was shocked to find her sleeping calmly.
The next day Heidi gets acquainted with Peter, a boy who takes care of goats, including her grandfather’s. When a goat runs off, and Peter chases after and catches it, he plans to hit it, but Heidi steps between them. Peter says he will let the goat go if Heidi gives him some of her cheese the next day. Heidi accepts the offer and even says she’ll give him some of her bread. At this time, Heidi had also been introduced to her grandmother and requested that her grandfather fix her house, which he obliged to. This wonderful cycle continues until Heidi’s Aunt Dete returns. Somebody whom Heidi’s aunt is working for has an only child that wants company. Aunt Dete told the family that Heidi was around the girl’s age and that she would come.
Heidi was sad to be leaving the mountains, but she came along. When she reached the house of her aunt’s employers, it was found out that the daughter was 12- four years older than Heidi. At first, everybody thought that things wouldn’t work out. But after Heidi went to the fullest extent she could to be friends with Clara, it was found out that the two made a wonderful pair. Heidi even got Clara kittens! However, soon after these events, Heidi began to long for her life in the mountains with her grandfather. She even began sleepwalking at night. She was then promptly sent home, and her grandfather and grandmother were both happy to see her, as well as Peter.
